OntoSPM Collaborative Action

Objectives

The general objectives of the OntoSPM Collaborative Action are the following:

  • to develop and share ontologies and knowledge bases in the domain of Surgical Process Models (SPM)
  • to evaluate such models by means of applications in the domain of Surgical Data Science
  • to develop and share software that facilitate the design, extraction, integration, alignment of ontologies in the domain of SPM, as well as the semantic annotation (i.e., based on ontologies) of surgical data (e.g., surgical videos, instruments’ movements records)

Scope

Main domains of interest in the area of Surgical Data Science:

  • simulation-based training of surgical personnel
  • development of context-aware systems (surgical phase/action recognition systems, video annotation systems)
  • surgical workflow management systems (preoperative decision support systems, intra-operative assistance systems)
  • surgical reports management systems
  • shared control and supervisory control robotic systems
  • clinical safety; prevention of adverse events

Examples of applications:

  • databasing of symbolic descriptions of surgical procedures (for learning, performance assessment, software challenges)
  • databasing and indexation of numerical models (for skill modelling)
  • surgical robotics: reasoning involved to perception-planning-action loops
  • surgical robotics: man-machine communication

The collaborative action's participants are:

  • Inserm - Université de Rennes 1. Signal and Image Processing Laboratory
  • Politecnico di Milano. Neuroengineering and Medical Robotics Laboratory
  • University of Haute-Alsace. Modelling, Intelligence, Process and Systems Laboratory
  • b<>com
  • Leipzig University, Faculty of Medicine - Innovation Center Computer Assisted Surgery (ICCAS)

Starting date: June 2016
